Floodplain Development

What is the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)?

The NFIP is a federal program enabling property owners in participating communities to purchase insurance protection against losses from flooding. Community participation in the NFIP is voluntary, and is based on agreement between the community and the federal government that states if a community adopts, and enforces a floodplain management ordinance, flood insurance will be made available. What is Floodplain Development?

Development, as defined in the City's FDPO, means any man-made change to improved, or unimproved real estate, including, but not limited to, buildings, or other structures, mining, dredging, filling, grading, paving, excavation, or drilling operations, or storage of equipment, or materials.

A FLOODPLAIN DEVELOPMENT PERMIT IS REQUIRED IN CONFORMANCE WITH THE CITY'S FLOOD DAMAGE PREVENTION ORDINANCE PRIOR TO THE COMMENCEMENT OF ANY DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES WITHIN THE SPECIAL FLOOD HAZARD AREA
