Although initially predicted to bring approximately 3 inches of rain to our area on Monday, September 16, 2024, Potential Tropical Cyclone #8 (PTC #8) dropped approximately 18 inches of rain in our area within just a matter of hours. Shortly after the storm began the City established its Emergency Operations Center and immediately began working with Brunswick County Emergency Management. A State of Emergency was declared for the City of Boiling Spring Lakes, as well as Brunswick County. PTC #8, described as a 1,000 year storm, resulted in historic flooding, causing significant damage to private, public and critical infrastructure.
On Tuesday, September 17, 2024 Governor Roy Cooper signed Executive Order No. 313 declaring a State of Emergency. This Order makes available additional resources for Brunswick, Bladen, Columbus and New Hanover counties. As City staff continue to assess damages, City officials and staff have been working closely with county and state officials to assess impacts and respond to community needs. Officials with North Carolina Emergency Management will be meeting with City officials and staff to assess damages and discuss recovery resources on Tuesday, September 24, 2024.

Agencies from the Brunswick County Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters are helping to provide support and resources following the storm. Individuals who are in need of assistance with food, clothing, clean up, etc. can contact Brunswick County Emergency Management at (910) 253-5383 to be added to an assessment list for support.
The American Red Cross has opened a shelter due to the flooding caused by PTC #8. The shelter is located at 121 Town Hall Dr., Leland, NC 28451 and is available free of charge.
